I think writing letters and postcards to your friends and family is such a lovely thing that we all need to do more of – here are 10 reasons why…

1. THEY COME IN LOADS OF AWESOME DESIGNS

There are always plenty of pictures to choose from, be it your holiday destination, or a crazy photo/saying, a cute kitty, or you can even draw your own picture on the front. You can find something that really personalises the card for the person you are sending it to. Equally you can buy fabulous letter sets with cute envelopes and stickers and everything.

2. YOU CAN WRITE WITH COOL PENS

Letter writing is a great excuse to whip out the old fountain pen and really brush up on your handwriting skills. Or you can even whack out a calligraphy set and make it really fancy!

3. IT’S NICE NOT TYPING

We spend so much of our time typing out things online, be they messages or essays, we can sometimes forget how nice it is to actually write with a pen and paper. It’s great to be able to just let the ideas flow straight to the pen and produce a stream of consciousness.

4. RECEIVING A POSTCARD/LETTER IS THE BEST THING EVER

Checking your mail and finding that someone has sent you a postcard/letter is the most exciting thing!! Firstly you know that someone thought enough of you to take the time to write to you and you often just sit down right where you are and read what they’ve been up to.

5. WRITING THEM IS PRETTY FUN TO

The process of writing can actually be really fun, as you are often improvising a lot and just let the message go where your mind wanders. But you can also get creative and write a tiny poem or a few lines in a different language or even draw some pictures – so it lets those creative juices flow!

6. YOU CAN BUY COOL STAMPS

You can get really great stamps with pretty designs on them that you can pick to suit the person you are sending them to. Plus if you’re abroad you can get some practice in a foreign language asking where to buy them from.

7. GET PERSONAL SIGNATURE STAMPS

You can also get personal stamps with your name, or address or a pretty picture. It just lets you go that one step further in personalizing your card or letter. You can get really cool ones, like a miniature drawing of your house on a stamp!

8. WAX SEALS

These are just a treat in themselves, you can pretend you’re in the 18th century and go all out on your letter with a proper wax seal. You can stamp your initial or an image in the wax and it is so fun to open an envelope that has a wax seal (Harry Potter style – I mean Harry Potter totally gets why sending letters is great!).

9. ALTERNATIVE WAY OF ACTUALLY KEEPING IN CONTACT

I often find that despite Facebook, sometimes my friends and I are actually amazingly bad at keeping in regular contact. Letter writing can really help you to have a regular pattern where you relate what has been going on in each other’s lives.

10. YOU GAIN A TREASURE CHEST OF MEMORIES

It is lovely to be able to look back at your messages in letters and postcards over the years and remember great places or moments in your life. You can also display your cards and letters, so you always have them to remind you of the things you’ve done!
