All the time I discover supermarket products that I assumed would not be vegan but by some miracle actually are. So I thought I would document the new things I find each week – as knowing that you can satisfy your sweet craving in Sainbury’s, not just your local health food shop which only does 9-5 hours and is usually closed on a sunday, is vital for vegan happiness. Plus you can name well-known items to your friends if they’re having you round so they actually know what to get you. This week is mainly about warm pies and tarts for February.
1. Sainsbury’s – Apple and Blackcurrant Pies
These have no dairy or egg which is fabulous news for when you want a lovely warming dessert. Just stick these in the oven and have them with some alpro soy custard = heaven!!
2. Sainbury’s – Basics Apple Pie
If you would like a whole pie, perhaps as a pudding for your dinner party, then this is your ticket! It is worth noting that the cheaper pastry desserts are often vegan, as plant oils are cheaper for production than butter woohoo! (Also love their tagline: “a little smaller, still in apple pie order”)
3. Mr Kipling – Jam Tarts
I don’t think I have enough jam tarts in life – I often never think of them but they are actually a surprisingly satisfying afternoon tea option, and look very pretty when decked out next to cakes and sandwiches.
4. Mr Kipling – Treacle Tart
And last but not least, Harry Potter’s favourite – treacle tart! A rich and decadent dessert for the cold winter months, which goes perfectly with some vegan villa ice cream such as swedish glace.
So stock up on vegan ice cream and custard and treat yourself to one of these delicious accidentally vegan treats!
Lots of love,
Sunny Kitty
